“But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.”
Luke 2:19 ESV
PONDER THE MESSAGE OF CHRISTMAS
Country music star Travis Tritt spent many years playing out-of-the-way beer joints before he made it big in the music industry. He reports that many of the bars were dangerous places, with drunk fans starting fights over the smallest matters. But Tritt found a unique way to keep the peace in such situations. He says his all-time lifesaver was “Silent Night.” Just when bar fights started getting out of hand, when bikers were reaching for their pool cues and rednecks were heading for the gun rack, he would start playing “Silent Night.” It could be the middle of July — it didn’t matter. He says sometimes they’d even start crying, standing there watching Travis play Christmas carols.
When we slow down and take time to ponder the message of Christmas it can have a powerful effect on our perspective on life. Luke 2:19 reads “But Mary.” We learned that Mary “treasured” and “pondered” all the events surrounding the birth of Jesus. A mom’s perspective on the birth of her child is always unforgettable and unique. She remembers details no one else remembers. There may be times when she takes out a baby book and shares the events of the day with powerful and vivid details.
Christmas can be a time when we take out the “baby book” on Jesus’ birth and “treasure” and “ponder” what that day means for us. Luke 2:1-20 is one of the “baby book” sections in Scripture on the birth of Jesus. Read that passage and write down a few things that would have stood out to you on that day.
