THE MISSION OF CHRISTMAS: A PRIORITY
It was just a few days before Christmas. Two men who were next-door neighbors decided to go sailing while their wives went Christmas shopping. While the men were out in their sailboat, a storm arose. The sea became very angry and the men had great difficulty keeping the boat under control. As they maneuvered their way toward land, they hit a sandbar and the boat grounded. Both men jumped overboard and began to push and shove with all their strength, trying to get the boat into deeper water. With his feet almost knee-deep in mud, and the waves bouncing him against the side of the boat, and his hair blowing wildly in the wind, one of the men said with a knowing grin, “It sure beats Christmas shopping, doesn’t it?”
It isn’t hard to forget what the true purpose of Christmas is and to get our priorities out of order. Shopping can be part of Christmas and enjoying time with family and friends may be a part of Christmas. But Jesus reminded Mary and Joseph that the priority of His birth was to be about His Father’s business. These were the first recorded words of Jesus in the Bible, “I must be in my Father’s house.” Another way to say it was Jesus’ main priority for being here was to fulfill the will of His Father in heaven.
Jesus was born as a baby for the purpose of growing up as a man who would die for the sins of the world. He came because we all have a sin problem and Jesus is the solution to our sin problem. In all our Christmas activities, let’s not forget the “reason for the season.” Make celebrating Jesus a priority this Christmas. Pray about a gift you could give to Jesus this year or another way you could celebrate Him.
