“And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.”

Luke 2:52 ESV

THE MISSION OF CHRISTMAS: MATURING

A six-year-old boy had been having trouble with bed wetting. The boy came to church with his mother. He had never been inside a church before. She explained the manger scene and Jesus asleep on the straw. The boy asked, “Did baby Jesus wet the straw?” His mother went blank. If she said yes, then her son would think it’s okay to wet the bed. If she said no, then would she deny that Jesus was fully human, like us in all things except for sin? What could she say?

An old priest was standing behind them. He told the boy, “Yes, baby Jesus wet the straw. The Son of God became a baby boy so that boys and girls can grow up to become like God and not wet their beds anymore.” The boy experienced enlightenment and opened his eyes wide. He was cured! From that day on, he never wet his bed again.

Though in His deity Jesus knew all things, in His humanity He had to grow in godly wisdom and in understanding of His divine calling and mission. The point is, Jesus was truly human. He never ceased to be perfect as God, yet He grew as a man. It was necessary for Him to be fully human in order to die as a sacrifice for the sins of the rest of humankind. Jesus was a perfect baby, a perfect boy and a perfect man.

Luke indicates that as a man, Jesus grew intellectually, physically, spiritually, and socially. Thus, He grew and matured like any other person. Once we embrace Jesus’ saving message of Christmas by becoming a Christian we can truly begin to grow and mature in every way God intends for us to grow. Which of the four areas of growth mentioned by Luke do you sense the greatest need for growth in your own life? What’s one thing you can do today to start growing in that area? What’s one lifestyle change you can make to start growing in that area? Ask God for the wisdom and strength to make that change.
