Digging Deeper – March 6, 2018
TUESDAY, MARCH 6
“Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So, when He heard that Lazarus was ill, He stayed two days longer in the place where He was. Then after this He said to the disciples, ‘Let us go to Judea again.’
John 11:6-7 (ESV)
MY UNANSWERED PRAYERS: WHEN GOD SAYS “SLOW”
There were 11 people hanging on to a rope that came down from a helicopter. Ten were men and one was a woman. They all decided that one person should get off because if they didn’t, the rope would break and everyone would die. No one could decide who should go. Finally, the woman gave a really touching speech on how she would give up her life to save the others, because women were accustomed to giving up things for their husbands and children and giving in to men. All the men started clapping. We know what happened next!
Obviously, hanging on to a rope suspended from a helicopter is not the time to start clapping. In similar fashion there are occasions when it’s not the time for God to say yes to our prayer request. When the timing is wrong God may say “slow down.” In the case of Lazarus’ sickness and death, Jesus waited 2 more days to go see him and his sisters. By the time Jesus arrived, Lazarus had been dead for 4 days. Jesus’ answer to heal Lazarus was yes but not now.
John 11 makes it clear that Jesus loved Lazarus and his sisters, Mary and Martha. It also makes it clear that Jesus still delayed in answering their request. God’s delays in answering our prayers are not because He doesn’t love us. Instead, sometimes God delays answering because He does love us and the timing is not right.
Do you feel like you are waiting on God to answer a prayer request? Be comforted by the fact that God does love you. Also, this is not time to let go of the rope of faith while you wait. Ask God to strengthen your faith and deepen your love.
