TUESDAY, MARCH 13
“Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to Him, came forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I Am He.” Judas, who betrayed Him, was standing with them. When Jesus said to them, “I Am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.”
John 18:4-6 (ESV)
CLOSE TO THE TRUTH: HIS POWER
Someone once asked Jay Kesler, former president of Youth for Christ International, if he believed that God could make a fish big enough to swallow a man. As a college president and above average in intelligence, in a world in which we have learned to split the atom and go to the moon and send spaceships to Neptune, did Kesler really think that God could make a fish big enough to swallow a man? I mean really? Dr. Kesler’s reply is one of simple trust in a great God. He answered, “Let me tell you, I not only believe that He can make such a fish, but the God who made the sun and the moon and the stars, if He wanted to, could air-condition and carpet the fish!” (Belief in the Word)
Judas had been an eyewitness to Jesus’ power but never committed to Jesus. He had seen Jesus heal people and feed 5,000 people with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish among countless other miracles. Yet Judas still failed to trust Jesus. On the night he betrayed Jesus there was another demonstration of Jesus’ power. A cohort of 400-600 men had come to arrest Jesus and when Jesus said, “I Am He”, all those men fell back from the power of His Word. They could only arrest Jesus because He allowed them to arrest Him.
Even in that dark hour of Jesus betrayal and arrest in John 18, Jesus held ultimate power over His enemies and the powers of darkness, because He is God. And even in your darkest hour He still has complete power and control. God is at work all around us every day. Don’t be like Judas who witnessed God’s power but failed to trust in God. In the past, how have you seen God’s power at work in your life? Pray and ask God to help you recognize His power today in creation, in your circumstances and through His Word.
