“From then on Pilate sought to release Him,…So he delivered Him over to them to be crucified.”
John 19:12, 16 ESV
WRESTLING WITH THE TRUTH: INDECISION
Making decisions in the dark can lead to some regrettable consequences. Back in the days before electricity, a tightfisted old farmer was giving his hired hand a hard time for carrying a lighted lantern when he went to visit his girlfriend. “Why,” said the farmer, “when I went a-courtin’ I never carried one of them things. I always went in the dark.” “Yes,” the hired hand said wryly,” and look what you got!”
Pilate had to decide what he was going to do with Jesus. Pilate really didn’t want to make the decision. Pilate tried to set Jesus free four times: 1) When he tried to give Him back to the Jewish authorities 2) When he sent Him to Herod 3) When He offered them a choice of Jesus or Barabbas and 4) When he washed his hands of the situation. However, Pilate still signed the death warrant. All the excuses and rationalizations cannot change the fact that He didn’t set Him free but condemned Him to die.
This is the response of many people today; they are not anti-Christian, they just want to avoid the claims of Christ upon their lives. They do not want to make a decision, but just watch from a distance or put off thinking about the meaning of life, their relationship to God, and the guilt of their sin. Even when we try not to make a decision, we are still making a decision. Are there decisions you believe God is asking you to make but you still haven’t made? If so, your decision for now is “no” even though you feel like you haven’t made a decision. Ask God for the courage and peace to give Him your yes in every area of your life.
