WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4
Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!” When the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him.”
John 19:5-6 ESV
FREED BY THE TRUTH: HIS INNOCENCE
Craig Coley was wrongfully convicted in California of the 1978 double-murder of a woman and her child. In November of 2017, he was released on the basis of DNA evidence, after serving 39 years in prison. According to the Innocence project, since 1989 over 350 people have been freed by DNA exonerations. The average length of time served has been over 14 years.
Can you imagine being convicted of a crime you didn’t commit? Can you imagine spending one day in prison much less 39 years in prison for a crime you didn’t commit? No less than 7 times, speaking of Jesus, Pilate said “I find no guilt in Him.” Yet the mob still wanted Jesus, an innocent Man, dead for crimes and sins He didn’t commit.
2 Corinthians 5:21 teaches us, “For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” The cost of our freedom was the death of our innocent God in our place. But it was also Jesus’ innocence that made Him an acceptable sacrifice in our place.
If you were taking to a court of law and tried for being a sinner, do you think the court would find you guilty or not guilty? If you had to serve time for all of the sins you committed, how long do you think the sentence would be? The thought of that could be overwhelming. The good news is that Jesus paid the penalty for every single one of the sins you can remember committing and the ones you can’t remember. Praise God for your sinless Savior today. Thank God that you are free from the condemnation and the guilt.
