“Then He said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here, and see My hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.’”

John 20:27 ESV

DOUBTING THE TRUTH: GOD’S PROOF

The late Dr. Billy Graham once preached, “Can you see God? You haven’t seen Him? I’ve never seen the wind. I see the effects of the wind, but I’ve never seen the wind. There’s a mystery to it.”

In John 20, seeing the effects of Jesus’ presence wasn’t enough proof for Thomas. He wanted to see Jesus for himself. There is very little doubt the excitement and changed countenance of the other disciples should have been a convincing argument. However, Jesus appeared to Thomas and allowed him to see His wounds.

Thomas was a sincere doubter. Not all doubters are sincere. Some use their doubts as a smoke screen to hide behind their pride, rebellion, or other sin, which is the real issue. If one area of doubt is cleared up, they will quickly duck behind another, because they don’t want to submit to the Lord. These people do not need more evidence to believe; they need to turn from their sin.

God has given us so many fulfilled prophecies and evidences of His existence, like the empty tomb, if we genuinely want to open our eyes and see. 1 Peter 1:8 talks about the blessing that comes to those who believe not having seen Jesus, “And although you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory.” Trusting is believing and that leads to an even greater blessing. This is not a blind trust but a trust that is based on the character of God and the things we have seen Him do in the past.

Billy Graham used the example of seeing the effects of the wind as a comparison to seeing God work. What effects of God’s presence have you seen lately in nature, your health, your finances or your relationships? Are your doubts sincere or are they just excuses to keep from fully surrendering to Jesus as Lord of your life?
