FRIDAY, APRIL 20

“The Lord said, ‘I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.’ And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind Him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah. So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?’ The Lord said to Abraham, ‘Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.’ But Sarah denied it, saying, ‘I did not laugh,’ for she was afraid. He said, ‘No, but you did laugh.’”

Genesis 18:10-15 ESV

DOUBTING THE TRUTH: POTENTIAL

A woman went to her doctor’s office. She was seen by one of the new doctors, but after about 4 minutes in the examination room, she burst out screaming and ran down the hall. An older doctor stopped her and asked what the problem was, and she explained. He had her sit down and relax in another room. The older doctor marched back to the first and demanded,
“What’s the matter with you? Mrs. Terry is 63 years old, she has four grown children and seven grandchildren, and you told her she was pregnant?” The new doctor smiled smugly as he continued to write on his clipboard. “Cured her hiccups though, didn’t it?”

Sarah laughed at the thought of being pregnant in her old age. She laughed after 25 years of waiting on God to fulfill a promise He had already made. Some say Sarah laughed because she doubted God, some say she doubted herself and some say she was just tired of being disappointed. Yet eventually, Sarah is listed in Hebrews 11 among the heroes of the faith. Sarah is a prime example of someone who struggled with doubt but eventually moved to a place of great faith.

After 25 years of waiting on God, Sarah eventually saw God fulfill His promise. Most of us would struggle with doubts after waiting that long. Let Sarah’s story encourage you today. We all have the potential of having great faith even after laughing at the promises of God. What do you believe God has promised you that seems so unrealistic it’s almost laughable? Be honest with God about it. Then ask God to give you the faith to hang in there and reach your full faith potential.

Faith is a gift that is strengthened over time through experience. Can you recall things about God that you doubted in the past that you no longer doubt? How long did the process take to grow you to a place of faith? What were the things that helped you in the process? How can you use some of the same things that helped you move from doubt to faith today with your current struggles?
