Digging Deeper – April 24, 2018
TUESDAY, APRIL 24
“After this Jesus revealed Himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and He revealed Himself in this way. Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, ‘I am going fishing.’ They said to him, ‘We will go with you.’ They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.”
John 21:1-3 ESV
FACING THE TRUTH: WHERE IT ALL STARTED
The story goes that Mark Twain loved to go fishing, but he hated to catch fish. The problem was he went fishing to relax, and catching fish ruined his relaxation, since he had to take the fish off the hook and do something with it. When he wanted to relax by doing nothing, people thought he was lazy, but if he went fishing he could relax all he wanted. People would see him sitting by the river bank and they would say, “Look, he’s fishing, don’t bother him.” So, Mark Twain had the perfect solution: he would take a fishing pole, line, and a bobber, but he wouldn’t put a hook on the end. He would cast the bobber in the water and lay back on the bank. That way he could relax all he wanted, and he would be bothered neither by man nor fish.
In John 21, Jesus had been resurrected and had appeared to the disciples twice, but they still weren’t quite sure what to do next. At that point Peter said, “I am going fishing.” If you love to fish, you get those words more than the rest of us. It was during this fishing trip that Jesus reappeared and restored Peter. There is no doubt that God wanted us to see in scripture all of the parallels between this encounter and the encounter when Jesus first called Peter to come and follow Him. After fishing all night, Peter had caught nothing just like the first time he met Jesus. And once again Jesus fills his nets with fish, just like the first time.
Often when we come to a place of renewed intimacy with Jesus, He reminds us of where we started with Him. Typically, when we first met Jesus we were at a place that we realized we had nothing without Him and everything we really needed with Him. Take time and reflect on the time when you first began to realize who Jesus really was. What did you realize about yourself at that moment and what did you realize about Him? How has Jesus filled your nets materially and spiritually? Thank God for what you have in Christ.
