“but these are written so that you may believe…”

John 20:31 ESV

BELIEVING THE TRUTH: THE WRITINGS

When poet and abolitionist Elizabeth Barrett became the wife of Robert Browning, her parents disowned her because they disapproved of the marriage. The daughter, however, wrote almost every week, telling them that she loved them and longed for a reconciliation. After 10 years she received a huge box in the mail that contained all the notes she had sent. Not one had been opened! Although these “love letters” have become an invaluable part of classical English literature and it’s really sad to think that they were never read by Elizabeth Barrett’s parents. Had they looked at just one, the broken relationship with their daughter might have been healed.

The Bible is God’s love letter to us. In the Bible are many letters written to different churches, individuals and groups by men inspired by God to write them. And how sad would it be if we never or rarely read them? God doesn’t just expect us to blindly place our faith in Him. He has given us a written record of His redemptive work throughout human history. We can read these letters and see His love poured out on humanity and have faith that He will continue to pour out His love on us.

John explains, in John 20:30-31, how it is possible that one could not see Jesus in person and yet still believe in Him. And of course, the answer is by reading the written record of His ministry, especially the seven signs John recorded in John 1-12. For one who really wants to know Jesus, these signs are more than sufficient for the Holy Spirit to reveal Him to our heart and mind so we can believe.

Do you take time to regularly read God’s love letter to you? Romans 10:17 teaches us, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Take some time and read Romans 10 today. According to Romans 10, who will be saved, how are they saved, and what part can you play in seeing people saved?
