“Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior”
Titus 2:3 ESV
WONDER WOMAN: A MODEL
Years ago, Reader’s Digest shared the story of a couple who were empty nesters. The wife shared, “Soon after our last child left home for college, my husband was resting next to me on the couch with his head in my lap. I carefully removed his glasses. ‘You know, honey,’ I said sweetly, ‘without your glasses you look like the same handsome young man I married.’ ‘Honey,’ he replied with a grin, ‘without my glasses, you still look pretty good too!’”
There is so much debate today on what a real woman looks like. Author Beth Impson wrote, “It isn’t a matter of figuring out what men want us to be or what other women want us to be or what we in our sinful flesh want to be; it’s a matter of figuring out what God intends us to be.” In Titus 2, the apostle Paul gives us a small glimpse of what God wants a woman to be.
Paul begins by encouraging “older women” to be “reverent in behavior.” “Older” means any woman that’s older than another woman. So, it’s not just to old women. And the word “reverent” means priest-like. And the word “behavior” comes from a word that means fragrance. It was obvious when a priest had been in the presence of God because they smelled like incense. Paul taught us that God desired for women to have a priest-like fragrance in the way they lived.
It is God’s desire that all believers, men and women, live in such a way that younger believers in the faith can see our actions and tell that we have spent time with God. The Apostle Peter wrote in 1 Peter 3:3-4, “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”
Ladies, would those who know you best say that you are just as beautiful on the inside as you are on the outside? Ask God to grow your inner beauty. Men, think about an inner quality that is beautiful in the women closest to you and let them know you celebrate and appreciate them.
