MONDAY, MAY 21

“David said to Saul, ‘Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine;

your servant will go and fight him.’”

1 Samuel 17:32 ESV

SPIDER-MAN: THE HEART TO FIGHT

This week we continued our Summer at the Movies sermon series and the theme was Spider-Man. In the 2002 film “Spider-Man,” Mary Jane(MJ) asked Peter Parker (Spider-Man), what Spider-Man said about her. Peter replied, “I said… uh… Spider-Man, I said uh… The great thing about MJ is… when you look in her eyes and she’s looking back in yours… everything… feels… not quite normal. Because you feel stronger and weaker at the same time. You feel excited and at the same time, terrified. The truth is… you don’t know what you feel except you know what kind of man you want to be.”

Something about being in love with MJ stirred Peter Parker to be the man he dreamed of being. And in 1 Samuel, God’s love for David ultimately drove him to fight Goliath and the many other battles that needed to be fought. Goliath had come out and challenged the Israelite army 80 times – every morning and every night for 40 days. In the Bible, 40 days is often associated with periods of testing and trial. No doubt this began to wear on the nation of Israel. Yet, David challenged the people to “Let no one lose heart.”

You may feel like your battle has lasted longer than 40 days and nights. But David would also challenge you to not lose heart. Don’t give up the fight. Continue to nourish your relationship with Christ and ask Him to give you a heart like David’s and to not give up. Can you think of any areas in which you are being tempted to give up on and God is telling you to stay and fight? Confess that struggle to God and ask for His help.
