Saul replied, ‘You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him;
you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.’”

1 Samuel 17:33 ESV

SPIDER-MAN: OLD ENOUGH TO FIGHT

There is a scene in Spider-Man when Peter Parker’s Aunt May tells him that a little boy wants to be Spider-Man when he grows up. Peter ask why and she said: “He knows a hero when he sees one. Too few characters out there, flying around like that, saving old girls like me. And Lord knows, kids like Henry need a hero. Courageous, self-sacrificing people. Setting examples for all of us. Everybody loves a hero. People line up for them, cheer them, scream their names. And years later, they’ll tell how they stood in the rain for hours just to get a glimpse of the one who taught them how to hold on a second longer. I believe there’s a hero in all of us.”

King Saul thought David was too young to be used by God to be a hero. But the Bible teaches that none of us are too young or too old to be used by God as heroes in His story.

Timothy was a young pastor who was mentored by the Apostle Paul. Paul gave Timothy a direct challenge in 1 Timothy 4:12, “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.”

Young Christians are all called to be examples in their speech, conduct, love, faith and purity. Even if we are not young we should ask ourselves if we being examples in these five areas. Pick the area that you would like to see the most growth in your life. Pray about one specific way that you can model that attribute today.
