FRIDAY, MAY 25

“Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd’s pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine.”

1 Samuel 17:40 ESV

SPIDER-MAN: EQUIPPED FOR THE FIGHT

A police officer jumps into his squad car and calls the station. “I have an interesting case here,” he says. “A woman shot her husband for stepping on the floor she just mopped.” “Have you arrested her?” asks the sergeant. “No, not yet. The floor’s still wet.” (Rose Mattix)

David didn’t have a gun, but he had a sling and Goliath had crossed the line. Goliath had dishonored God and God’s people and David had everything he needed for the fight. Goliath was over 9 feet tall with 125-200 lbs of armor plating, a 15lb bronze javelin and a sword strapped to his side. This Philistine fighting machine was more than two feet taller than Shaquille O’Neal.

Max Lucado writes: “Your Goliath doesn’t carry sword or shield; he brandishes blades of unemployment, abandonment, sexual abuse, or depression. Your giant doesn’t parade up and down the hills of Elah; he prances through your office, your bedroom, your classroom. He brings bills you can’t pay, grades you can’t make, people you can’t please, whiskey you can’t resist, pornography you can’t refuse, a career you can’t escape, a past you can’t shake, and a future you can’t face.”

Life is filled with Goliaths, but we have the weapons we need for the fight. 2 Corinthians 10:3-6 reminds us, “For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.” Ask God to show you the divine weapons He wants to use to defeat your Goliaths. Then follow David’s example and take your enemies head on.
