THURSDAY, JUNE 7

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered.  Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.”

Luke 12:6-7 ESV

WONDER: THE VALUE OF KINDNESS

At the end of the school year, in the movie Wonder, Auggie wins the Henry Ward Beecher medal for being the student “whose quiet strength has carried up the most hearts.” And you can hear Auggie reflect, “Maybe the truth is, I’m really not so ordinary. Maybe if we knew what other people were thinking we’d know that no one’s ordinary, and we all deserve a standing ovation at least once in our lives. My friends do. My teachers do. My sister does for always being there for me. My dad does for always making us laugh. And my mom does the most, for never giving up, on anything. Especially, me. It’s like that last precept Mr. Browne gave us. Be kind, for everyone is fighting a hard battle. And if you really want to see what people are, all you have to do is look.”

In Luke 12, Jesus taught the disciples that they had great value in God’s sight. He used and argument of going for lesser to greater. If not a single cheap sparrow is overlooked by God, can you imagine how valuable you are to Him?”

All of humanity has value because we have all been made in the image of God. Everyone doesn’t see themselves as having value. And that’s where we as the church come in. We have the privilege of sharing and showing people just how valuable they are to God. They are so valuable that He died on the cross for them. If our society spent more time trying to let people know how valuable they are there would be a lot less bad news to report.

Auggie was right. At some point, “Everyone is fighting a hard battle.” Pray and ask God to show you someone who needs a “standing ovation” today? Ask Him to reveal to you how you can tell or show them that they are valued today.
