FRIDAY, JUNE 15

““For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church.”

Ephesians 5:31-32 ESV

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST: HAPPILY EVER AFTER

In the closing scenes of Beauty and the Beast, the Beast lies dying from a wound inflicted during combat with Gaston, his enemy. Belle, the beauty, finally confesses her love for the Beast and just in time gives him the kiss that breaks the curse. The Beast is transformed back into a handsome prince and they live happily ever after.

If only it were that easy for us to live “happily ever after.” Someone said, “Relationships are just two people constantly asking each other what they want to eat until, one of them dies.” Somewhere between “happily ever after” and “what do you want to eat,” lies the truth.

The truth is God hasn’t designed marriage to be the “happily ever after” ending to our story. Instead, Ephesians 5:31-32 teaches us that marriage is designed to be a reflection and preparation for the relationship God wants with us. The Bible describes the church (Christians) as the bride of Christ. And just like a bride getting ready on her wedding day, it’s not always all pretty until she’s ready for the ceremony.

Marriage is one of the tools God uses to get us ready for our wedding day in heaven. We aren’t everything we should be yet, but we should be growing toward who we are going to be one day. Just because your marriage isn’t perfect, know that it is designed to be a growing process and overflow from your relationship with Christ.

In what ways is your current relationship situation like an imperfect bride getting ready for the big day? How could viewing your marriage as a reflection of your relationship with Christ change things? Pray that God would use your marriage or future marriage as a picture for others to see the kind of relationship God wants with us.
