“You will make me full of gladness with Your presence.”
Acts 2:28 ESV
DECLARATION OF DEPENDENCE: PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS
There was a group of students in Texas taking a class on the psychology of emotions. The professor wanted to know what the opposite of happy was. One student raised their hand and said, “Sad.” Then the professor asked, “What’s the opposite of depression?” “Elation,” another student said. Then the professor said, “What’s the opposite of woe?” One student stood up and said, “Giddy-up.”
In Acts 2, King David was experiencing the opposite of “woe.” While David’s enemies were pursuing him, he was experiencing the “gladness” of God’s presence. He refused to allow
his circumstances to dictate his existence. Rather than focusing on the trials, he focused on the
Lord. This brought great abundance emotionally and spiritually.
Our Founding Fathers believed the “pursuit of happiness” was a God given right. But the Bible actually teaches that God pursues us and in His presence is joy. Can you think of things in the past that you have pursued to find happiness? Can you think of ways that God has pursued you recently? Often, we experience joy by simply taking the time to slow down and making ourselves aware of God’s activity and presence in our life. Try to find some time today to turn off the electronic distractions and get alone with God. Maybe a walk in the park or time on the porch. Ask Him to fill you with His joy during life’s chaos.
