TUESDAY, JULY 10
“But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. So he went down to Joppa, found a ship which was going to Tarshish, paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.”
Jonah 1:3 NASB
ON THE RUN: RUNNING FROM GOD’S PRESENCE
A mom retold the story of hurrying her 11-year-old daughter to school, “I turned right on a red light where it was prohibited.” “Uh, oh,” I said, realizing my mistake. “I just made an illegal turn.”
“It’s all right,” my daughter said. “The police car behind us did the same thing.”
Jonah made an “illegal turn” when he tried to run away from God’s presence. Jonah found a ship and tried to run away but God was right there behind him. Someone said, “When a person decides to run from God, Satan is always happy to provide the transportation.” However, you can’t really run from God’s presence. God is everywhere. What Jonah was really running from was God’s will, God’s work and God’s calling.
God is everywhere. There are just times when we are more aware of His presence than others. Have you ever felt aware of the presence of God? What have the times been like in life when you didn’t have a sense of His presence? In Psalm 139 David described God’s constant presence and awareness of our lives. The Psalm ends with David praying, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.” Read Psalm 139 and let that be your prayer today.
