“But the Lord said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people”
Jonah 4:10-11 NASB
ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT: CREATION
A young man told his mother one day he was an atheist and that he didn’t believe in God any more. She quietly responded, “If there is no God, who made the world? He replied, “Nobody made it, it just happened.” A few days later he came home from school and passed through the kitchen. A sandwich was sitting on the counter. He asked, “Who made the sandwich?” His mother said, “Nobody made it, it just happened.” That young man was wrong. Just as there could be no sandwich without a sandwich maker, there can be no creation without a Creator.
Jonah got all worked up about a shade plant dying that he didn’t even make. Jonah had more concern about that plant than he did about the 120,000 people who would have been destroyed had they not repented and turned to God for mercy. God used the plant to illustrate His concern for the people He created. God has always loved the world. God has always desired that all people everywhere repent and come find love and forgiveness in a relationship with Him. Unfortunately, many people choose not to trust their Creator.
We are all made in God’s image and because of that every life and soul matters to God. God is always about people first. Augustine said, “The city of God is a place where the inhabitants love people and walk on gold. The city of man is a place where the inhabitants love gold and walk on people. What is something you can do today to show someone who may not know God the worth and value they have because they are made in His image? Ask God to lead you to that person.
