“And Peter said to them, ‘Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’”
Acts 2:38 ESV
Baseball great Yogi Berra was known for making some hilarious and confusing statements. Yogi said: “Nobody goes to that restaurant anymore — it’s too crowded.” Someone asked Yogi what time it was; he said, “You mean now?” Yogi was asked his philosophy of life: “When you get to a fork in the road, take it.” He also said, “I don’t want to make the wrong mistake,” “You can see a lot by watching” and “If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up somewhere else.”
There’s actually some truth in those statements. Spiritually speaking, if we don’t know where we’re going, we will end up somewhere else. In Acts 2:38, Peter told the crowd they were going the wrong way spiritually and needed to turn around. He used the word “repent.” In the previous verse, the crowd had been convicted and asked Peter what they should do. Peter’s response was to turn from your sin and follow Jesus.
One evidence that we have placed our faith in Jesus is a desire to turn from sin and allow Jesus to be in charge of our lives. It’s one thing to feel bad about our past sin. It’s another thing to do something about it and to make a change. If you are ready for a change and asking where you should start, the Bible teaches we should repent of our sin, place our faith in Jesus and begin to follow His plan for our lives. Do you sense a need for repentance in your life? If so, confess to God that you are ready to turn and follow Jesus. Are friends and family asking you for advice? If their greatest need is repentance, ask God to give you a loving boldness to tell them the truth.
