“attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes”

Acts 2:46 ESV

BOLD LIFESTYLE MISSION

Years ago, a fictional news story made its way around the internet about 23-year-old Linda Burnett. She was supposedly visiting her in-laws, and while there went to a nearby supermarket to pick up some groceries. Several people noticed her sitting in her car with the windows rolled up and with her eyes closed, with both hands behind the back of her head. When they finally got in, they found that Linda had a wad of bread dough on the back of her head. A Pillsbury biscuit canister had exploded from the heat, making a loud noise that sounded like a gunshot, and the wad of dough hit her in the back of her head. When she reached back to find out what it was, she felt the dough and thought it was her brains. She initially passed out, but quickly recovered and tried to hold her brains in for over an hour until someone noticed and came to her aid.

When the early church was “breaking bread,” it wasn’t exploding cans of biscuits. Instead, “breaking bread” was a way of describing Christians spending time together in their homes. Yesterday we answered the question, “When did the early church live out their mission?” And the answer was, every day. Today we are asking the question, “Where did the early church live out their mission?” And the answer is, everywhere. They were on mission for God at their public gatherings in the “temple” and they were on mission for God at home “breaking bread.”

Part of the daily mission of the church was making it a lifestyle. It wasn’t just a Sunday thing and it wasn’t just a church thing. They wanted to practice what they preached in church and in their homes. We can assume they also were on mission for God at work, in the marketplace, in their recreation or any other place they went. Is there a disconnect for you between your church life and your home life, work life, school life or recreational life? What are the things or people that make it hard for you to live out your faith away from church? Ask God to help you overcome the things that get in the way of making your faith part of your daily lifestyle.
