FRIDAY, AUGUST 31
“And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”
Acts 2:47 ESV
BOLD SEARCH AND RESCUE MISSION
On August 30, 2005 Coast Guard Lieutenant Iain McConnell was ordered to fly his H46 helicopter to New Orleans and to keep the machine flying around the clock for what would turn out to be a heroic rescue effort. Much of the city of New Orleans was underwater. On their first three missions that day they saved 89 people, three dogs and two cats. Lt. McConnell had a fourth mission that day. On the fourth mission, despite twelve different flights to New Orleans, he and his crew were able to save no one. None! They all refused to board the helicopter. Instead they told the Coast Guard to bring them food and water. Yet they were warned that this was extremely dangerous. Sadly, many of those people perished because of their refusal to be rescued.
Saved is the word the Bible uses to describe what happens to people who have a personal relationship with Jesus. Saved might sound like a churchy word but it is a good description of what God does when we accept Jesus into our lives. He saves us from the danger of hell. God was using the early church every day to help rescue people from hell and the penalty of sin.
Jesus invites all His followers to join the rescue party by showing and sharing Jesus with the people around us. If we truly believe what the Bible teaches about heaven and hell we will want to help rescue as many people as we possibly can. Pray for those you know who have continued to refuse to be rescued by Jesus. Pray that God would soften their hearts and give you an opportunity to introduce them to Jesus.
