“and He upholds the universe by the word of His power.”
Hebrews 1:3 ESV
JESUS IS WORTH IT: HIS HANDS
Pastor Tim Keller once said that in 1970 a Sunday school teacher changed his life with a simple illustration. The teacher said, “Let’s assume the distance between the earth and the sun (92 million miles) was reduced to the thickness of this sheet of paper. If that is the case, then the distance between the earth and the nearest star would be a stack of papers 70 feet high. And the diameter of the galaxy would be a stack of papers 310 miles high.” Then Keller’s teacher added, “The galaxy is just a speck of dust in the universe, yet Jesus holds the universe together by the word of his power.” Finally, the teacher asked her students, “Now, is this the kind of person you ask into your life to be your assistant?”
The book of Hebrews was encouraging the early church by reminding them that if Jesus could hold the world together he could hold them together. They needed to know that Jesus wasn’t just a passive assistant waiting for a job description. Instead, God had their lives in the palm of His hands and was very much in control.
Many of us learned the song, “He’s got the whole world in His hands,” as kids. The cute part of the song is, “He’s got the itsy bitsy baby in His hands.” The awkward part of the song is “He’s got the gamblin’ man in His hands. He’s got the sinner man in His hands.” The older we get the more we realize we need the awkward part of the song just as much as we need the cute part of the song.
If God upholds the universe, what is there in your life that you think He can’t handle? List the things in your life giving you problems. Now pray and thank God that He has them in His hands. You could even fill in the blank in the song with your problems, “He’s got the (blank) in His hands.”
