“Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession”
Hebrews 3:1 ESV
JESUS CHANGES MY IDENTITY
A young minister, with very small children, preached to his congregation on the theme, “10 rules to raise good and godly children.” Some years later, with his children entering their teens, he returned to his theme, but the same sermon was entitled: “10 suggestions for raising good and godly children.” Several years later, with his children now in their late teens, the sermon got another airing, this time presented as, “Feeble hints for fellow strugglers.”
Raising children is a task that many of us were completely unprepared for with lofty and unrealistic expectations. Raising children can be one of the hardest and most rewarding things we ever do. The author of Hebrews continues to use the family analogy as a picture of our relationship with Christ. In Hebrews 3:1 Christians are called “holy brothers.” The word “holy” means we are set apart by God from certain things and for certain things. We are now part of a special family. And even though we are not perfect and still have lots of room to grow, that doesn’t change that fact that God sees us as His special children who have been set apart for by Him and for His special purposes.
Can you think about an important phone call in your past that changed your life? Those calls can be good or bad calls. As God’s children we have had a “heavenly calling.” That call from heaven changed our life and our eternity. We may be “feeble fellow strugglers” but we are His children and that makes all the difference. Reflect on the time when you first sensed God calling you into a relationship with Him. What was it about that call that drew you in? Thank Him for that call.
