“where your fathers put Me to the test and saw My works for forty years.
Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart;
they have not known my ways.’”
Hebrews 3:9-10 ESV
A HEART TO LISTEN DOESN’T PLAY GAMES
Here is a test to see if you listen well: 1. A bicycle can’t stand on its own because it is two-tired. 2. What’s the definition of a will? (It’s a dead giveaway.) 3. Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana. 4. A chicken crossing the road is poultry in motion. 5. Show me a piano falling down a mineshaft, and I’ll show you A-flat minor. 6. When a clock is hungry, it goes back four seconds. 7. The man, who fell into an upholstery machine, is fully recovered. 8. You feel stuck with your debt if you can’t budge it. 9. A lot of money is tainted. It taint yours and it taint mine. 10. Marathon runners with bad footwear suffer the agony of defeat.
The children of Israel suffered spiritual defeat in the wilderness because they did not listen to God well. They had seen God perform miracle after miracle for 40 years and they still wanted to put God to the test by asking Him to do things the way they wanted Him to do them. Author Kent Hughes comments that “The point the writer of Hebrews wants his readers to see is that it is possible to have a remarkable spiritual “exodus” and yet fall by the way when trouble comes.
When seasons of doubt start to creep in it is often helpful to remember where God has brought us from. Take some time today and think about some of the times God has moved in significant ways in your life. What did God say to you during those times? What does God want you to remember about those times today?
