“let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it.”
Hebrews 4:1 ESV
JESUS WANTS TO REWARD US: FEAR
Airport travel has seemed to have gotten more and more difficult. And the, much appreciated, efforts to keep us safe in the sky have made airport security lines longer and the regulations tighter. If you fly very often, you have probably had to make the mad dash through the airport to try and make it to your flight before they close the cabin door. Because we all know once that door is closed they aren’t opening it again and someone is going to be helping you look at getting booked on the dreaded “next available flight.” We then have to let anyone know who was expecting us that we didn’t make the flight.
Hebrews 4 deals with a much more serious problem. Worse than missing a flight is missing heaven. The author writes, “let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it.” The word used for fear in this case means to be frightened or terrified. In classical greek it meant to run away. The verse is teaching we should be terrified that someone might not have saving faith in Jesus and miss heaven.
When you come short of something, you can miss it by an inch or by a mile, but you still miss it! The bible teaches anything short of trusting in Jesus to save your soul is missing it. Believing in a higher power but not Jesus is missing it. Being religious but not having Jesus is missing it. Being a good person but not having faith in Jesus is missing it.
If we believe the bible, we should be terribly afraid that some will die without faith in Christ and go to hell. It’s a huge deal. Are you afraid that any of your friends, family members, coworkers or classmates will die without salvation and miss heaven? The antidote to fear is God’s love. 1 John 4:8 teaches, “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. Fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.” Pray for anyone you know who you fear may not have a saving relationship with Jesus. Pray that God would overwhelm them with His perfect love and they will turn to Jesus in faith.
