“Consequently, He is able to save”

Hebrews 7:25 ESV

JESUS IS ABLE TO SAVE

Four-year-old Little Johnny asked, “Mommy, where do babies come from?” “The stork, dear,” replied Johnny’s mom. “Mommy, where does food come from?” “Farmers, dear.”  “Mommy, who keeps bad people from robbing our house?” asked Little Johnny. Johnny’s mother answered, “The police, dear.” “Mommy, if our house was on fire, who would save us?” “The fire department, dear.” “Mommy?” “Yes, dear?” “What do we need Daddy for?”

The audience of the book of Hebrews was asking, “What do we need Jesus for?” After all they had their old Jewish religion and the system of priest who would help them make sacrifices for their sins. The author of Hebrews continued to give them reason why they needed Jesus and not their old religion. In Hebrews 7:25, the author writes of Jesus, “He is able to save.” The Greek word for “able” comes from the same word we get our words power, dynamic and dynamite. It’s also in the present tense which means Jesus continually has the power to save. The Greek word used for “save” also means to rescue or preserve from harm. So if we put all that together, Jesus has to power to continually rescue and keep us from harm.

Religion has never had the power to save or rescue anyone. Our religious acts have always been our attempt to reach God. But Jesus is God’s attempt to reach us. We can never do enough or be good enough to earn our way to heaven. Hebrews 7 teaches that only Jesus has the power to get us to heaven. This week we are looking at the key verse of Hebrews 7 which is Hebrews 7:25. Take some time to read or reread Hebrews 7 so you can have a better context for our other Digging Deepers this week.

Can you remember a time in your life when you were hoping you were good enough to earn your way to heaven? When did you realize that only Jesus had the power to save you? Or are you still trying to be “religious” enough to try to earn your way into heaven? Jesus died because there was no other way for us to be saved from the penalty of our sins. Thank Him today for His sacrifice and power.
