TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13

“For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts,”

Hebrews 8:10 ESV

NEW POSSIBILITIES

A nurse on the pediatric ward, before listening to the little ones’ heart beat, would plug the stethoscope into their ears and let them listen to their own hearts. Their eyes would always light up with awe, but she never got a response to equal four-year old David’s comment. She tucked the stethoscope gently into his ears and placed the disk over his heart. “Listen,” she said…”What do you suppose that is?” He drew his eyebrows together in a puzzled line and looked up as if lost in the mystery of the strange tap-tap-tapping deep in his chest. Then his face broke out in a wondrous grin, and he asked, “Is that Jesus knocking?”

God promised that one of the benefits of the new covenant would be a change of heart. Many of us think of the Ten Commandments given to Moses as God’s law and representative of the first covenant. Well, the first covenant lacked the power to energize life change because it was on tablets of stone, not on the tablets of their heart and mind as in the new covenant.

These terms “mind” and “heart” cover the whole of man’s inward nature. One pastor noted that this as “a new inner control center in the individuals who are inheritors of this covenant.” In Romans 6:17, Paul rejoices “that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed.”

God is concerned about our hearts and minds being in the right place. Our outward behavior can be faked. But if God gets into our hearts and minds our lives will be changed forever. The old covenant was on tablets of stone. There are times when our hearts may feel hard and cold like those tablets. Talk to God today about the tenderness and openness of your heart and mind toward Him and His word.
