“For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at His coming? Is it not you? For you are our glory and joy.”
1 Thessalonians 2:19-20 ESV
THANKFUL FOR THE FUTURE
On the 3rd day of October, 1789, President George.Washington, at the request of Congress made the following declaration, proclaiming a National Thanksgiving:
“Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me ‘to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:…’ –Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3rd day of October, A.D. 1789, G.Washington”
The highlight of Washington’s declaration was “a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts that many and signal favors of Almighty God.” God’s favor is a gift. It is something God gives us out of His kind heart and not because we have earned it or deserved it.
Paul believed the people who made up the church at Thessalonica were a gift from God and he celebrated them. He boasted in what Jesus had done in their lives and what was to come. Paul looked forward to “His coming.” Paul hoped and believed the best was yet to come.
As we celebrate this Thanksgiving with family and friends, we should take time and reflect on our past blessings from God and express our gratitude. However, we should also take time to look forward and express our gratitude for the future hope we have in heaven with other believers. This is especially meaningful for those of us who may have had a tough year or lost a loved one. Thank God for our future hope today.
