“the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:14 ESV

GRACE AND TRUTH CAME

There was an art contest held in a school one Christmas season years ago in East Texas. One of the prize winners was a picture drawn by a nine-year-old boy showing three men, offering gifts to the baby Jesus in his manger. What made the picture unique is how the three gift presenters arrived – there was fire truck on the side of the picture. The principle asked the boy about his decision to draw the truck and the boy, in his heavy East-Texas accent, was quick to reply, “Well, the Bible says the wise men came from a-far.”

If you’ve ever been to East Texas you know that “a-far” and “a fire” sound very similar when the locals say it. The Bible teaches us that Jesus came all the way from the Father in heaven “full of grace and truth.” And we desperately need both grace and truth. If we have one without the other, we are out of balance and can mislead others. When we have all grace but no truth, we can be dangerous. We can give people a loving sense of false security by leading them to believe that there are many different ways to God when in fact Jesus is the only way. When we have all truth but no grace we can be condemning. We may tell people the truth about sin and it’s consequences but not share the grace that God has offered them through His Son, Jesus Christ.

I like to think of being full of “grace and truth” as always telling people the truth in love. When we genuinely love people we tell them the truth even if it’s hard to hear. And the end goal is to help them, build them up and lead them closer to God. What are examples you’ve seen in our culture where people want love but they don’t want truth? What are examples where people want to proclaim truth but don’t show grace or love? Ask God to fill you fully with HIs grace and truth today.
