“those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
on them has light shone.”
Isaiah 9:3 ESV
A DARK LAND
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.” This is the opening paragraph from A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. He was providing analysis of the disruptive state of affairs in 18th century England, as well as across the Channel, in France. He could have just as easily been identifying the state of affairs in our own country today.
When Isaiah wrote Isaiah 9, it was the worst of times in the nation but he wanted to share about the coming best of times. People in both the Northern and Southern Kingdoms faced hopeless situations. Political unrest and the constant threat of war were persistent problems. Sickness was rampant and hunger was an ever present reality. Isaiah 9 was a prophetic word of how the Messiah was going to light up the world when He came.
In what ways is it the worst of times in our nation? In what ways is it the best of times in our nation? Where do we need God’s light to shine in our nation? Pray for our nation in those areas where God’s light is desperately needed.
