“And a leper came to Him, imploring Him, and kneeling said to him, ‘If You will, You can make me clean.’”

Mark 1:40 ESV

THE HEART OF NORTHSTAR: A HEART FOR THE HURTING

Last week I (Larry) was trying to get in some quality time with my sons so we went to a YMCA to play indoor soccer. In my mind, I am still in my late teens and early twenties athletically. In reality, my body is in my late 40’s. After a good half hour of trying to keep up with the guys I suddenly felt what seemed like a baseball bat hitting the back of my calf. I thought one of the kids kicked me because they were so jealous of my amazing soccer skills. Instead, my achilles tendon had ruptured. I was definitely hurting.

I tried to walk off the pain but the next day it became obvious I needed help. The great thing was I had several options where I could get help for my physical pain. Needless to say, I was in some pretty intense pain and would need surgery to repair the damage. In Mark 1, a leper came to Jesus who was hurting. He was hurting physically because of his skin disease, but he was also most likely hurting emotionally from being cast out as “unclean.” And rejected spiritually as “unclean.” This man knew if he could get to Jesus, he could get help for his hurts both physically and spiritually.

Where do people go in our community when they are hurting? We have lots of doctors offices and urgent care centers around. But where do they go when their heart is hurting? Or when they are spiritually struggling? Our church wants to be a place where hurting people can come and find acceptance and healing. This means we must ask God to cultivate in us a heart for hurting people.
