“Moved with pity , He stretched out His hand and touched him and said to him, ‘I will; be clean.’”
Mark 1:41 ESV
THE HEART OF NORTHSTAR: A HEART LIKE HIS
A little 5-year-old boy one day was playing with his 2-year-old brother when the 2 year old reached up and yanked his older brother’s hair. He screamed in pain, and his mother came rushing in. He cried and said that his younger brother had pulled his hair. His mom said, “Well, he’s only 2 years old and he doesn’t know what it’s like to have his hair pulled.” The mom left and seconds later she heard a scream from the bedroom, but this time it was the 2 year old screaming. She asked the 5-year-old what happened. The 5-year-old said, “he knows what it feels like now.”
The word pity or compassion in Mark 1:41 comes from two Greek words. One word means stomach and the other word means to be moved. When we have compassion, we hurt with someone. Basically, Jesus was moved deep inside by this man’s condition and this man’s faith. Jesus saw His pain and did not remain indifferent. Instead, Jesus was moved and hurt in His heart for this man.
Luke 5 reminds us of Jesus’ purpose and our purpose. Luke 5:30-31 reads,“And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, ‘Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?’ And Jesus answered them, ‘Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.’” Aren’t you grateful that Jesus sees your hurt and has compassion and not condemnation. Who do you believe are the “sick” in our community that need a spiritual physician? Ask God to give you a heart like His for the spiritually needy.
