“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.”

Hebrews 10:23 ESV

UNWAVERING CONNECTION

The story is told of a monastery in Portugal, perched high on a 3,000 foot cliff and accessible only by a terrifying ride in a swaying basket. The basket is pulled with a single rope by several strong men, perspiring under the strain of the fully loaded basket. One American tourist who visited the site got nervous halfway up the cliff when he noticed that the rope was old and frayed. Hoping to relive his fear he asked, “How often do you change the rope?” The monk in charge replied, “Whenever it breaks!”

If you’re being pulled up a 3,000 foot cliff by rope, you want to feel pretty sure the rope is going to hold you. The early church was wavering in their commitment to Christ and the author of Hebrews wanted them to know God was the ultimate promise keeper. In the same way, the author of Hebrews wanted us to be sure that God’s promise to hold us was unwavering.

Have you ever been in an on again and off again relationship? How did that make you feel? God is not an on again and off again God. He is faithful and keeps his promises. Our hope and our faith may waiver but Jesus, the object of our faith and hope, never waivers.

When missionary John Paton was translating the Bible for the South Sea islanders, he was unable to find a word in their vocabulary for the concept of believing, trusting, or having faith. He had no idea how he would convey that to them. One day while he was in his hut translating, a native came running up the stairs into Paton’s study and flopped in a chair, exhausted. He said to Paton, “It’s so good to rest my whole weight in this chair.” John Paton had his word: Faith is resting your whole weight on God. That word went into the translation of their New Testament and helped bring that civilization of natives to Christ. Believing is putting your whole weight on God.

What areas of your life are you not putting your whole weight or faith in God to handle? Ask God to help you fully surrender those areas.
