“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
Hebrews 11:1 ESV
In June of 2018 Hasbro released a special edition of the iconic game Monopoly called “Cheater’s Edition.” In this edition players are encouraged to do what many players have done for years and that is to bend the rules and get away with cheating. If you get caught cheating there are toy handcuffs that you use to handcuff players to the board while you are in jail. One of the cheat cards encourages players to try and steal the “title deed” of a property from the bank or another player. Obviously, Boardwalk and Park Place are the prize possessions.
In real life, a title-deed is what guarantees you own a property. In our spiritual life, faith is the “title-deed” or “assurance” of what we are expecting from God in the future. Hebrews 11 uses God’s past activity to give us a reason to place faith in God with our future. Biblical faith is not a blind faith. Biblical faith trusts God with a future we cannot see based on what we already know about God’s character and nature from the past.
Because of what God has done in the past we can trust Him with our future. James McConkey wrote, “Faith is dependence upon God. And this God-dependence only begins when self-dependence ends. And self-dependence only comes to its end, with some of us, when sorrow, suffering, affliction, broken plans and hopes bring us to that place of self-helplessness and defeat.” What are the areas that you most struggle with when it comes to ending your self-dependence and placing your dependence on God? Can you find any Biblical examples that are similar to your situation and how God came through for others in the past? Ask God to help you trust Him based on what you know about His character and nature.
