“By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered Him faithful who had promised.”

Hebrews 11:11 ESV

MESSY FAITH

Many of you have seen friends on Facebook or social media post things like, “It’s 11:11, make a wish.” This 11:11 trend is wrapped up in superstitious numerology and is basically powerless and harmless. However, if Sarah from the Bible could have made a wish at 11:11, it would been to have a child. The Bible tells us she and Abraham were both too old to have children, but God promised not only would they have a child but that they would give birth to a nation.

The challenge of seeing Sarah’s name in Hebrews 11, the great hall of faith, is that in Genesis 18, Sarah is rebuked for her lack of faith when God makes the promise. Some say Sarah doubted God. Some say Sarah doubted herself and her body’s ability to carry a child. Others say that after 25 years of waiting on God’s promise she was just tired of being disappointed. Either way it was a messy faith journey for Sarah and Abraham. Yet, in the end they did find a way to trust God.

The only explanation for Sarah and Abraham, two very flawed people with very flawed faith, making it into Hebrews 11 is God’s grace and mercy. The truth is all the people listed in Hebrews 11 had flawed faith in one way or another. That should bring comfort and hope to us. We know that our faith is flawed and sometimes is stronger than others. Think back on some times when your faith was weak and you struggled to trust God. Now think back on times when your faith was strong and you rested in Him. How did God feel about you in both situations? He loved you unconditionally and remained faithful to you as His child. Thank God for His unchanging love for you.
