MONDAY, FEBRUARY 11

“Women received back their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, so that they might rise again to a better life.”

Hebrews 11:35 ESV

FAITH CAN BE CONFUSING

On July 16, 1999, JFK Jr., affectionately known as John John, was flying a single engine Piper Saratoga into Martha’s Vineyard. Tragically, the plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean 7.5 miles west of Martha’s Vineyard. That night was hazy and dark with no moonlight. In their final report released in 2000, the National Transportation Safety Board concluded that the crash was caused by an inexperienced pilot who became disoriented in the dark and lost control. He most likely experienced what’s called spatial disorientation. JFK Jr. was not trained in relying on his instruments for flying and most likely was relying on his feelings.

Spatial disorientation is the inability to determine one’s position, location, and motion relative to their environment. A similar thing can happen in our spiritual lives. Life can get cloudy. Circumstance can make us feel disoriented spiritually. One moment our environment makes us feel secure, victorious and joyful and the next moment can make us feel defeated, sad, insecure and afraid.  Faith is the instrument God uses to get us home safely.

In Hebrews chapter 11 between verses 30-40 there is a list of extreme faith situations. Some of those situations are miraculous victories and others are what appear to be terrible defeats. Some people experienced resurrections and others experienced torture leading to death. The one thing they all have in common is they were experienced by people who had placed their faith in God and God’s plan.

Have the apparent outcomes of your faith ever made you feel confused? This week we will be taking time to study Hebrews 11:30-40 in greater depth. Take some time now and read all of Hebrews chapter 11. While you read take note of the feelings that you can most identify with in your walk of faith. Ask God how He wants your faith in Him to guide you through your present situations.
