“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us”
Hebrews 12:1 ESV
CONSIDER THE CROWD
The other day I was walking with my 10 year old through the store and she pointed to a kid’s blanket and said, “That was on Shark Tank.” It was a Snuggie tail blanket that came with shark tails, mermaid tails, gold fish tails and other tails. The best part was they had them for kids and adults. It’s not the first time we’ve seen something in the store that we first saw on the show Shark Tank. The basic idea of the show is someone has a relatively new product and they have to convince the wealthy investors that it’s worth them taking a chance on their investment. One of the things the potential investors almost always ask is “what have your results or sales been so far?” They want to know if other people have tried the product and liked it.
In Hebrews 12:1 is encouraging us to put our faith in Christ because of all the others who have experienced the rewards of placing their faith in Christ. The author writes, “since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses.” The witnesses are all of those names mentioned in Hebrews 11 who by “faith” saw God work. Some of the witnesses experienced tangible faith victories here on earth. Others of the witnesses experienced the power of faith to sustain them through great suffering. And all of the witnesses would say placing your faith in God is worth the investment in the end.
One of the reasons God has given us the Bible is so that we can see His track record. So that we might be encouraged to trust Him with our day to day decisions but ultimately to trust Him with our souls for eternity. What bible character’s faith story most encourages you? In what ways is that bible character just an ordinary person who saw God do great things through their faith? Thank God for that story. Ask God to use your faith story to show someone else that faith in Jesus is worth the investment.
