“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us”
Hebrews 12:1 ESV
DECLUTTER THE GOOD
Netflix sensation Marie Kondo has created a decluttering craze. It’s hard to scroll through social media without seeing pictures of neatly rolled t-shirts in drawers or bags of clutter being donated to the local thrift store. According to journalist David McAlpine, “the Japanese organization expert encourages people to clear out their clutter, keeping only the things that “spark joy” for them. All joyless items should be thanked, before being tossed out or given away.” What would spark joy for me(Larry) is if Ms. Kondo would come to my house for free and declutter for me. The general principle is that there are some things we need to keep in our lives and other things we need to get rid of to make life better.
The author of Hebrews also wants us to declutter. The author wants us to run the christian race of faith and to run well. He knows that in order to do that we occasionally have to get some things out of our lives that are slowing us down. People who are serious about running races do not carry extra baggage—you have never seen an Olympic runner carrying a suitcase or talking on a cell phone during the race. The author challenges us by saying “let us also lay aside every weight.” “Weights” in this instance are not necessarily sinful things. Weights can be good things but even good things can slow us down in the faith. Sometimes the weights may be unnecessary relationships, too many responsibilities, hobbies or a host of other things.
One of the things about clutter, is it can sometimes be useful to someone else. So even though it’s taking up time and space in your life it may help someone else. Similarly, the spiritual weights in your life may not be weights in someone else’s life. If you had to take a spiritual inventory of your life, what things might be weights that are slowing you down in your walk with Christ? What would it take to lay those weights aside? Ask God what He wants you to do with those weights.
