THURSDAY, APRIL 4
“Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.”
Romans 13:11-12 (ESV)
WRITING YOUR LIFE’S GOAL
Farmer John and his wife, Nelly, went to bed at the same time every night for years. Until one night their old grandfather clock chimed 13 times at midnight instead of 12 times. The farmer started shaking his wife and said, “Wake up Nelly. It’s later now than it’s ever been before.”
Farmer John was right even though his clock was wrong. It is later now than it’s ever been before and everyday we get closer to our last day on earth. Romans 13 says “salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.” That’s another way of saying we are closer to dying and going to heaven then when we first trusted Christ for our salvation.
Someday in the future, people will read your obituary. It will summarize some of the things you did to accomplish your mission. Obituaries often contain the passions and pursuits of the person being memorialized. Your life goal(s) are birthed from the people, situations, or realities of this world that cause a holy discontent to rise up within you. What is it that keeps you awake at night thinking about? Who or what are you passionate about helping? What situation or circumstance in your world do you want to change for the good? Once you think about those passions of yours, you may wonder if you are concerned about the right things. The way to determine that is to ask if your life goal will glorify God or self. Another way to determine if your goal is a worthy pursuit is to ask, “Will the pursuit and/or accomplishment of this goal accomplish something that is also on the heart of God?” Take a few minutes to write down at least one of your life goals below. This should reflect a burden for something or someone you currently have on your mind and in your heart. Then, ask the Lord to help you take steps toward accomplishing this goal beginning today.
