“You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor?”

My wife, Valerie, is an outstanding cook! However, a few weeks ago she prepared a dinner that lacked taste. She said that she didn’t add enough seasoning. It was bland. She made the comment that “it needed more salt” to increase the flavor. That comment caught my attention. Salt doesn’t just make your food tastier—it’s actually required for life. While doing some research, I learned that sodium ions help the body perform a number of basic tasks, including maintaining the fluid in blood cells and helping the small intestine absorb nutrients. We can’t make salt in our own bodies, so humans have always had to look to their environments to fill that essential need.This world environment that we live in is vile. It is full of depravity. The world lies in the lap of the “evil one.” However, if you are a Christ follower, a Disciple of Jesus Christ, then you can expect hatred, persecution and tribulation (John 16:33). As a Christian, we have been called out of the world system. We are called to be different. Because we identify with Christ, we will be hated and persecuted. Light will always expose darkness. We don’t condone the sinful lifestyle of the world. Jesus asks us to live a life that is “counter-cultural.” He asks us to be “Salt” in a world that is tasteless, vile and bland.So where do you stand today? Are you living a life that is shaking and spreading Godly flavor to the world around you? Or have you lost your flavor by living a self-indulged life or one that is blending in to the world system, not standing out? If it is the latter, I strongly encourage to change. Be the “Salt of the Earth.” Make a difference. Stand out. Don’t be ashamed. Don’t blend in. Listen closely, Jesus bought you. He redeemed you. He adopted you to be His child. He bled out for you on a torturous cross. He chose you. He put His finger on you and said “You are Mine.” So everywhere you go be a salt-shaker. Spread a little here and a little there by the way you talk, live and act. Simply share Gods’ love with those you encounter—and if necessary, use words.
