Biblical Character: What is It?

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Galatians 5:22-23

A big part of the job for any college baseball coach or professional baseball scout is to gather as much information about the "Character" of the prospect you are targeting to recruit or draft. Most would agree that “Character” is of high importance when adding a player into your program or system in order to build a championship team. However, what’s shocking is that many in sports and life cannot define the word, Character. Many have no idea how to articulate it. If you ask ten people you'll likely get ten different answers--or no answer at all. As a professional baseball scout, one of the questions I ask every potential draft prospect is the following:"In your own words, define for me what the word “Character” means? As a Christian, a disciple, a follower of Jesus Christ, can you define the Character of Christ? What is it? He is our model, our standard, the One we are seeking to emulate. Therefore, we should know and be able to define the Character of Christ. Here is the truth: There is only one answer that describes His Character. Here it is. Pay close attention. The "Character" of Christ is defined by the nine “Fruits of the Spirit” in Galatians 5:22-23. These nine 'attributes' describe “Who Jesus Is.”

  • Love
  • Joy
  • Peace
  • Patience
  • Kindness
  • Goodness
  • Faithfulness
  • Gentleness
  • Self-Control

That’s it! Nothing more and nothing less. These nine attributes describe the “Character” of Christ. They describe “Who He is.”Authentic, biblical, Christian Character is not just our personality or disposition; it is a description of "who we are" as a Christian and what we are called to be in our entirety. It encapsulates the "Fruit of the Spirit" from God's love and work in us.If you’re going to chase after anything in this life, chase after the “Character of Christ." You will never perfect all nine of these attributes this side of heaven; however, you can make progress daily, weekly, monthly and yearly . . . and that will bring God great glory with your life.Love God!
