“Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your path straight.” – Proverbs 3:5-6
For many years, my “god” was sports. As a kid, I loved playing them, I loved watching them, I loved reading about them. The sports page of the newspaper was the very first thing I looked at every morning as a kid growing up in Ravena, N.Y. As I went through my high school and college years, I knew that I wanted to work in sports someday. In July of 2000, I was able to achieve that dream and get a job as a producer with ESPN. Working at the biggest sports media company was everything I thought I wanted in life. It became my identity. It became my god.
And then, something changed. It was Mother’s Day 2001 and my brother Chris shared with me for the first time who Jesus Christ was. As he was sharing the message of salvation, the message of the cross, something in me began to change. My heart was opened and my life began to have a greater purpose.
In God’s word, it clearly states how we can all have this same freedom found in Christ. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in Him, shall not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16
What an amazing act of love that God the Father would send his only son for you and I so that we could spend eternity with Him forever.
That promise, along with Ephesians 2:8-9, where it says “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.”
For me, understanding that we cannot do anything to earn God’s grace, and that by simply repenting, trusting and believing in Jesus as Lord, was a game changer.
Almost 18 years after I first began my journey with God, I’m still a work in progress. I’m still growing in my relationship with Jesus and continuing to pursue Him each day.
And that whole ESPN dream job thing? It ended in February 2017, as I felt called to do more for God and work for a more eternal purpose. Now, I’m telling stories of faith and sports with Sports Spectrum and God is getting all the glory.
Proverbs 3:5-6 says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your path straight.”
This has become my life verse and something I believe we can all implement into our own lives.
I would encourage you this week to put your faith and trust in God and I promise you He will make your path straight.
Have a great week.
