Serving in Special Needs Ministry: it’s as easy as saying YES

The number one thought that keeps people from serving in Special Needs Ministry: “I don’t have any experience. I wouldn’t know what to do.” Don’t let the fear of the unknown keep you from following where God may be leading. He always equips us for the work He leads us too.

I am here to tell you that you don’t need experience AND it’s one of the most rewarding things you will ever do. Through training, I will teach you everything you need to know from understanding this population, to engaging our students, to fostering¬†an environment and experience that will make Sunday mornings successful and exciting for every child. I promise you that even if you have absolutely no experience, you will walk into the Image-ine classroom on Sunday morning prepared and equipped.

Now let me tell you how rewarding serving in this ministry will be. I have watched a little girl with Cerebral Palsy go from needing assistance from laying to sitting to begin walking on her own. I have seen a little boy with a feeding tube go from not being able to have solid foods without vomiting to eating more and more. I have seen a boy who communicated verbally only with quite a bit of prompting begin to speak on his own volition. I’ve walked with families through hospital stays where doctors can’t figure out what’s going on so all that’s left to do is pray and trust-He is always faithful. I’ve seen children who once kept to themselves from a lack of social skills begin to blossom socially and even have the courage to go to four days of camp away from home. I’ve seen more joy in the heart of a nonverbal child than in most adults I meet. I’ve cried as I listened to a boy literally scream (not sing) the words to a worship song in the most unabandoned act of worship I’ve ever experienced. I’ve seen a child who despised coming to church become a child that can’t think of anything more exciting to do. I’ve seen volunteers with no experience fall in love with every single one of these children, and this is just a small glimpse of the beauty and joy you will find serving in this ministry.

I promise you one thing: If you choose to serve in this ministry, your heart will grow ten fold.
