Day 10 – Pray Unselfishly
“Our…us” – Matthew 6:9-13 (ESV)
When we were kids, almost all the petitions we made to our parents were selfish. At the store, when we saw something we wanted, we would throw a tantrum right in the middle of the store if we didn’t get our way. Who could blame us? That’s just what kids do because kids are immature. They only know to ask for selfish reasons. As you mature and grow as a believer, your prayers will mature as well.
The model prayer that Jesus gave us is not a selfish prayer. It’s a family prayer (“Our”) to the head of the family (“Father”). Notice how Jesus says to pray. Our daily bread. Our debts. Our debtors. Lead us. Deliver us. When we pray, we should not only pray for ourselves but for others as well, especially those in our spiritual family.
The temptation we all face is that we make prayer into a selfish act where we only ask for what we want. Strive to be more balanced in your personal prayer time. Don’t only pray for yourself to be blessed but pray that God would bless others as well.
As you give your requests to the Lord today, ask Him to bless others in similar ways.
