Day 15 – Pray for protection from temptation
“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” – Matthew 6:13 (ESV) (Part 1)
First, let’s understand what is not being said here in this part of the prayer. James 1:13 says, “Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God,’ for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.” God does not do the tempting. He does not put evil desires in our hearts. Jesus is teaching us to pray that the temptation to disbelieve God and disobey Him would not take us in (“into temptation”). We pray that God would deliver us from the evil that is set before us. We are not asking that God would take us to a place where we could finally escape the possibility of being tempted. That means He would have to take us to heaven and away from this world. Obviously, there are some places and situations we should avoid because it’s unduly tempting and just not wise. This prayer is mainly that God would give us the wisdom and strength to withstand and escape temptation when it opens the door and pleads for us to take a step inside.
Ask the Lord to strengthen you against the temptations that will open their door to you today. Ask that you would be so enamored and satisfied in Him that temptation loses its luster and lure in your life.
