“‘Now, Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.’
But the Lord replied, ‘Is it right for you to be angry?’”
Jonah 4:3-4 NASB
ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT: CHECK-IN
In 1835 a man visited a doctor in Florence, Italy. He was filled with anxiety and exhausted from lack of sleep. He couldn’t eat, and he avoided his friends. The doctor examined him and found that he was in prime physical condition. Concluding that his patient needed to have a good time, the physician told him about a circus in town and its star performer, a clown named Grimaldi. Night after night he had the people rolling in the aisles. “You must go and see him,” the doctor advised. “Grimaldi is the world’s funniest clown. He’ll make you laugh and cure your sadness.” “No,” replied the despairing man, “he can’t help me. you see, I am Grimaldi!”
Sometimes the person who everyone thinks is the life of the party is really struggling with life. Jonah was supposedly a great prophet of God but he was struggling with anger and depression. God checked on Jonah’s heart by asking him, “Is it right for you to be angry?” In other words, “How is this anger working out for you Jonah?” Jonah was on a roller coaster of emotions. First, we see him angry and he wants to die. Then we see him happy because he has some shade. Finally, we see him angry again and wanting to die.
Unresolved anger can be debilitating. Emotional health is important to God. God wants us to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. And if our heart isn’t healthy we can’t love God or love others the way He wants us to love.
Take some time today to let God do a heart check up on you. Do you wake up rejoicing in the Lord always, or do you wake up on the wrong side of the bed every single day? Sometimes the cure can be as simple as slowing down and spending time with God and others who will love and encourage you. And there are other times when we may need to seek more professional help to help us through depression and anger. Ask God how He wants to help you heal.
