“So the Lord God appointed a plant and it grew up over Jonah to be a shade over his head to deliver him from his discomfort. And Jonah was extremely happy about the plant…Then God said to Jonah, ‘Do you have good reason to be angry about the plant?’
Jonah 4:6, 10 NASB
ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT: COMFORT
An atheist was sitting under a tree one day smugly thinking: “God, I know you don’t exist but if you do exist you must be really stupid. Look at this huge oak tree. It’s got tiny acorns on it. And look at that large watermelon carried by such a small vine. Now, if I had been you, I would have created the huge oak tree to carry the big watermelons and the small vine to carry the little acorns. That would make a lot more sense.” Then suddenly an acorn fell and hit him on his head. Immediately, the atheist thought, “Thank God that wasn’t a watermelon!”
Jonah was okay if God wanted to make a plant to provide shade and help him with his momentary discomfort. But Jonah was not okay if God wanted to eternally deliver the people of Nineveh from a place of sin and judgement to a place of repentance and God’s comforting grace.
God’s comfort brings joy just like that shade brought Jonah joy. Jesus taught that Satan comes to steal, kill and destroy our lives. Often, the world lies to us about what is really going to give us joy, peace and contentment. And we find ourselves seeking lasting comfort in temporary pleasures.
Can you remember a time in your life when you trusted someone or something for comfort but it didn’t last? Is there anything in your life now that Satan could be using to deceive you about true lasting happiness? Ask God how He wants to provide you comfort in His will today.
