“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching…”
Acts 2:42 ESV
BOLD DEVOTION TO LEARNING
A young boy decided to learn how to ice-skate. He had fallen so many times that his face was cut, and the blood and tears ran together. Out of sympathy, a man skated over to the boy, picked him up and said, “Son, why don’t you quit before you kill yourself?” The boy wiped the tears from his face and told the man, “I didn’t buy these skates to learn how to quit; I bought them to learn how to skate.”
The early Christians were devoted to learning about God through the Apostles’ teaching. They stuck to learning God’s Word so they could learn how to live like Jesus. At that point in time, the Apostles’ teachings probably fell into three categories: 1) The Old Testament; 2) The teachings of Jesus which He instructed them to pass on (Matt. 28:20) and 3) The things the Holy Spirit had been leading the apostles to teach.
A teachable attitude is essential in any growing relationship. Years ago, I (Larry) came across a bumper sticker that read, “People who think they know everything really bother those of us who do.” None of us know everything there is to know about God, life and faith. We must be devoted to learning God’s word if we are going to thrive spiritually. Ask God to give you a teachable heart and a hunger for the Bible.
“Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.” 1 Peter 2:2-3 ESV
